copy Kristina Mueller and Lee Ann Sporn present "Catching the Light," a featured artist exhibit on display during the month of February at NorthWind Fine Arts Gallery in Saranac Lake. This exhibit was inspired by the seemingly magical transformation of natural objects by their interplay with light.  Lee Ann, a biologist, avid hiker and explorer, enjoys observing nature from unique perspectives and aspires to capture the beauty and wonder in even the most mundane natural objects. She enjoys working in many mediums and styles, and presents a collection of abstract oil paintings of ice, gems and minerals found in Adirondack streams, along with detailed colored pencil renderings of a few small creatures in their own quest to "Catch the Light".  Kristina, a conceptually driven designer, has let the figurative interpretation of the literal inspiration guide her designs. To her "Catching the Light" is about finding beauty in unexpected places and recognizing that something positive can be taken away from all situations. She applies different textural elements to sterling silver and features labradorite, a stone of transformation, and moonstone, a stone of inner growth and strength, to tell her story.  The February 2nd opening is free, the public is welcome. Light refreshments will be served. NorthWind Fine Arts is a cooperative gallery in the heart of the High Peaks Region of the Adirondacks. Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday 11-5, and Sunday, 11-4.

New Copy Experience martial music at its best! From the American Revolution, to the Civil War, to modern commemoration, learn about the practical purpose of fifes and drums. Enjoy the stirring rhythms and tunes of these classic marches and camp songs. Admission to the Fife & Drum Corps Muster is included in a Fort Ticonderoga general admission ticket. Come back for the Evening Twilight Tattoo, performed at 7 pm inside the old walls of Fort Ticonderoga. This event includes individual and combined performances on the fort parade ground, a march on Montcalm Street in downtown Ticonderoga, and a Twilight Sunset Tattoo.  "The Fife & Drum Corps Muster highlights the role Fife & Drum music has played in the commemoration of American history. Fife and Drum Corps gained increased popularity during the American bicentennial celebrations,” said Beth Hill, Fort Ticonderoga President and CEO. “In 18th-century military life, fifes and drums served as one of the primary modes of battlefield communication and camp regulation.” Today the Fort Ticonderoga Fife and Drum Corps is comprised of Ticonderoga area high school students who are paid employees of Fort Ticonderoga, an independent not-for-profit educational organization and museum. The Fife and Drum Corps is part of Fort Ticonderoga’s Interpretive Department whose focus brings to life Fort Ticonderoga’s specific history through daily interpretive programs, historic trades, special events, and museum educational outreach.

New Copy Stand on the very ground and march out to the "Old French Lines," where French soldiers entrenched themselves during the epic Battle of Carillon on July 8, 1758. Join Fort Ticonderoga’s Fife and Drum Corps to lay wreath and remember the day-long battle where the British had suffered casualties of nearly 2,000 men killed and wounded. The Battle of Carillon would prove to be France’s greatest victory of the French & Indian War. Preserved on the Carillon Battlefield at Fort Ticonderoga, is the largest series of untouched 18th-century earthworks surviving in North America. Legendary within the British & American army, personally remembered by many senior officers in both, this battle filled Ticonderoga with far more meaning than merely its strategic location.

New Copy The Adirondack Film Society Proudly Presents the World’s First Fully Oil-Painted Feature Film This film brings the paintings of Vincent van Gogh to life to tell his remarkable story. Every one of the 65,000 frames of the film is an oil painting hand-painted by 125 professional oil painters who traveled from all across the world to the LOVING VINCENT studios in Poland and Greece to be a part of the production. As remarkable as Vincent’s brilliant paintings are his passionate and ill-fated life and mysterious death. The Adirondack Film Society (AFS) Screening Series at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts (LPCA) will present LOVING VINCENT on Friday and Saturday, February 16-17, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance by calling the LPCA box office at (518) 523-2512; they will also be available at the door. For more information, please visit lakeplacidarts.org or adirondackfilmsociety.org or call AFS Operations Manager Fred Balzac at (518) 588-7275 or 523-3456.   Letting the Paintings Tell the Story No other artist has attracted more legends than Vincent van Gogh. Variously labelled a martyr, a lustful satyr, a madman, a genius and a layabout, the real Vincent is at once revealed in his letters and obscured by myth and time. As Vincent himself said in his last letter, “We cannot speak other than by our paintings.” The filmmakerse take him at his word and let the paintings tell the real story of Vincent van Gogh. Directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, who coauthored the film’s screenplay with Jacek Dehnel, LOVING VINCENT was first shot as a live-action film with actors and then hand-painted over frame-by-frame in oils. The final effect is an interaction of the performance of the actors playing Vincent’s famous portraits, and the performance of the painting animators, bringing these characters into the medium of paint. LOVING VINCENT features the following familiar faces, matching the famous paintings they portray: • Douglas Booth (Jupiter Ascending, Noah) stars as Armand Roulin; • Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark, Jack the Giant Slayer) is Adeline Ravoux; • Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones) plays Doctor Gachet (the painting of which held the record for the highest priced painting for fourteen years, the longest time ever); • Saoirse Ronan (Oscar nominee for Brooklyn and Atonement) plays his daughter Marguerite Gachet; • Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, The IT Crowd) is Postman Joseph Roulin; • John Sessions (Filth, Gangs of New York) is Vincent’s paint supplier, Pere Tanguy; • Aidan Turner (The Hobbit, Poldark) is the Boatman from Vincent’s Bank of the Oise at Auvers painting; • Helen McCrory (Harry Potter) plays Louise Chevalier, house-keeper to Doctor Gachet; • and introducing theater actor Robert Gulaczyk in his first film role as Vincent van Gogh.   Nominated for a 2018 Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Animated.   What the critics are saying: “An animated masterpiece! An absolutely stunning film that not only does justice to the art of Van Gogh, but also to the art of movies. I have never seen anything on screen like it before. You will be amazed and lifted by this extraordinary film.”—Pete Hammond, Deadline “A one-of-a-kind work of art.”—Variety “Hypnotic and beguiling.”—A.O. Scott, The New York Times “Remarkable. You will marvel at the art in this labor-intensive labor-of-love.”—Bob Mondello, NPR’s “All Things Considered” “A new film that tears up the rule book of animation….I’ve not experienced anything like it before.”—Florence Waters, The Telegraph “A jaw-droppingly beautiful film.”—Tomris Laffly, Film Journal International
