New Copy Brighten your holidays with Lightwire Theater's A Very Electric Christmas. Audiences of all ages will treasure this magical and captivating tale of family, friendship and hope set to timeless holiday hits including Nat King Cole, Mariah Carey and Tchaikovsky. When a young bird gets separated from his parents, while flying south for the winter, his holiday adventure begins as he attempts to be reunited with his parents and make it home to celebrate Christmas. Lightwire Theater, known for their signature brand of dazzling visuals, poignant storytelling and music designed to evoke imagery, debuted their first holiday show “A Very Electric Christmas” in their hometown of New Orleans in December of 2013. This show has unique elements that may be customized and/or localized for your City or State, i.e., the fleur de lis at the top of the Christmas tree, the logo on the helmet, etc. This captivating and magical tale of adventure, friendship and love, centers around a young bird named Max, a familiar character to Lightwire Theater audiences and brings a whole new meaning to coming “home for the holidays.” Performed in complete darkness, this creative storyline features Nutcracker soldiers with candy-canes, naughty Rats, an electric Christmas tree surrounded by presents, glow worms, dancing flowers and other creatures that light up the stage.

New Copy The Skate into New Year event was created by Christie Sausa, a figure/speed skater, Kiwanis Club member, and philanthropist whose goal was to provide a wholesome, family-friendly event for families in Lake Placid during New Year's Eve. It is hosted on the Lake Placid Speed Skating Oval from 10:30 pm - 12:30 am, and remains a unique way to ring in the New Year, with many guests making it a holiday tradition and traveling from throughout North America to "Skate into the New Year". Called "Skate into 8 (2008)" in its first year, the event benefitted the Skating Club of Lake Placid, and the next year benefitted the Lake Placid Youth Hockey Association as well. The admission fee was kept low ($5), with students and armed services members receiving free admission to encourage young people to enjoy the evening in a substance-free setting. Realizing that "if you can't eat, you can't skate", Sausa made the Lake Placid Ecumenical Food Pantry the beneficiary charity in 2010, and it continues to benefit from the event, receiving approximately $1,000 every year from Skate into New Year. All proceeds benefit the Lake Placid Ecumenical Food Pantry, as the community generously donates ice time on the Oval, staff, food, and beverages for the enjoyment of the party-goers. Please contact us with any questions and thank you for making Skate into New Year a success!

New Copy As sites of public learning where audiences have come to expect both an educational and enjoyable experience, museums, cultural centers and historic sites have an astounding impact on how knowledge and memory is shaped in the public sphere. This presentation discusses several New York State museums and how public memory has impacted past and present community perspectives. One example includes Sainte Marie among the Iroquois Living History Museum, a 1930s replica of a 17th century Jesuit mission located in Syracuse, New York, that was repurposed as Skä•noñh - The Great Law of Peace Center, a Haudenosaunee Educational center. Participants are encouraged to engage in active dialogue about their personal experiences and memories related to museums in their community. The goal is for participants to develop new perspectives regarding how knowledge and public memory are constructed by engaging their own stories in dialogue with others. Dr. Debora Ryan has been working in the museum field for more than twenty years, most recently as senior curator at the Everson Museum of Art from 2003 to 2013. Debora teaches Museum Studies courses at Wells College, Aurora, New York, and is currently teaching Native North American Art at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences. Ryan has a Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations of Education and a M.A. in Art History from Syracuse University. Her dissertation, 'A Jesuit Mission in the Salt City: Sainte Marie among the Iroquois Living History Museum,' examines the role museums play in constructing knowledge and public memory through an analysis Sainte Marie's history as the "French Fort" and its transition into a Haudenosaunee Educational Center known as Skä•noñh: Great Law of Peach Center. This program, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities' Public Scholars program.
